While relatively new, the HB represents the un-mounted portions of the former C3 and B tests. It is presented in a practical, hands-on form and involves identification, discussion as well as evaluation in various areas of study. It is conducted in a small group format that rotates between different stations that serve the various topics. The test utilizes cards to test the candidates. These cards are available at the USPC bookstore and should be available through your region or local club.

Some ways in which successful candidates have prepared for the tests include referencing the cards attending preps, and visiting tack shops to look at the different equipment that exists. For the shoe removal portion, work with a farrier to familiarize yourself with the process. The teaching portion should be practiced on your more junior members for format as well as time limit. On this site you will find reference material that can help you as you prepare.

Things to note that are changes that are not yet documented on the test sheet yet:

* Bring your own thermometer to the test. It can be either digital or mercury but know the pros and cons of each
* No real horses will be used for un-mounted teaching portion of the test. This is in the interest of time and to negate suitability issues.
